Karim and Luc Berchiche form the artist duo La Fratrie, and together, the brothers’ four hands make light work - you could say lighter than air. Their “floating island” sculptures form weightless worlds. Each construction is a meticulous representation of a utopian vision. They aim to interrogate man on his relationship with the environment. The duo’s magnificent creations are both familiar and obsolete – the frequently recurring image of the cabin touches us despite its physical intangibility. The balance of each piece is fragile. The idyll that La Fratrie creates remains just out of reach as it floats through the air, highlighting the transience of human condition and the delicate nature of the world around us.
The La Fratrie collection for Each x Other continues the duo’s ongoing interrogation of the relationship between man and his surroundings. Camouflage suits and coats herald a return to nature, literally allowing us to become one with the environment around us. Utility is a dominant theme. Military style shirts and camouflage jumpers are embellished with embroidered images of the pair’s iconic “floating islands”, reminding us that “the pursuit of happiness” lies in our mission to improve our relationship with the natural world.
